En Sphynx behöver i stort sätt samma skötsel som en "vanlig" katt.

Mat

Det finns en vanlig missuppfattning om att sphynxar ska ha ständig tillgång på foder. Detta är en sanning med modifikation och mattillförseln skall naturligtvis anpassas till individen. Ålder, aktivitetsnivå och om katten är fertil eller ej är faktorer att ta hänsyn till. Vissa sphynxar har lätt för att lägga på hullet, speciellt efter kastrering, och andra katter har hög förbränning och behöver tillgång till mer mat.

Bad

Efter flera år med sphynx har jag, liksom många andra, upptäckt att bad egentligen är något ganska onödigt för en sphynx. När man badar sin katt överstimuleras produktionen av de naturliga hudoljorna - obalansen leder till att katten ser smutsig ut snabbare. Efter att under långa perioder helt avstått från att bada mina sphynxar har jag tydligt märkt hur hudens balans återgått till det normala och de ser alltid fräscha ut trots att de aldrig tvättas om det inte är absolut nödvändigt. Om det finns allergi i hemmet kan det behövas bad för att man ska tåla sin katt men men tumregeln bör vara att man inte ska bada sin sphynx oftare än absolut nödvändigt. Som allergiker kan man prova sig fram till hur lång tid det kan gå mellan badtillfällena utan att man reagerar på katten.

Klor

Även om katten inte badas behöver klorna rengöras regelbundet. Hudutsöndringar och smuts samlas lätt i klofickan. Rengöring av klor är lämpligt att göra ca en gång per vecka. Oparfymerade babyservetter passar bra till ändamålet. Klippning av klorna kan göras samtidigt om man så önskar.

Öron

Sphynxen har inget hår i öronen. Den har dessutom en ganska kraftig produktion av öronvax. Därför behövs öronen rengöras försiktigt vid behov. Oparfymerade babyservetter passar till vardaglig rengöring. Om öronen behöver rengöras djupare finns det speciella öronrensvätskor man kan använda sig av. Peta aldrig med tops annat än i ytterörat.

Ögon

Skräp som samlas i ögonvrån "sugs" enkelt bort med en bit hushållspapper. Detta görs vid behov.

...och naturligtvis

Förutom detta behöver en Sphynx självklart kärlek, stimulans och sällskap precis som alla katter!

Food

There is a usual misconception that the sphynx need constant access to food. This is a truth with modification and the foodsupply should of course be individually adapted. Age, level of activity and whether the cat is fertile or not, are factors to consider. Some sphynxcats easily gain weight, and other cats have high metabolism and need access to more food.

Bath

After some years with sphynx, I have discovered that bathing a sphynx really is something quite unnecessary. Bathing overstimulates the production of natural skin oils - the imbalance makes the cat look dirty faster. After long periods, completely without bathing my sphynxcats, I have clearly noticed that the skinbalance has returned to normal and that the cats always look fresh out even though they are never washed unless it is absolutely necessary. Allergies in the home may require bathing the cat more frequently. However, the general rule should be that the cat should not be bathed more than absolutely necessary. A good idea for allergy sufferers is to try to figure out the maximum duration of time that can be tolerated between baths. This is of course very individual.

Claws

The claws need cleaning. Skinoils and dirt easily accumulates in the "pocket" of the claw. Cleaning is usually needed about once a week. Clipping the claws can be done at the same time.

Ears

The Sphynx has no hair in the ears, it also has quite a large produktion of earwax. The ears must be carefully cleaned when needed.

Eyes

Dirt in the corner of the eye is easily removed with a piece of papertissue when needed.

...and of course

Besides all this the Sphynx needs lots of love, stimulation and company just like all cats!
